Da Brat opened up to Variety Magazine about coming out as gay at the age of 46. She said the
announcement was not planned, but after her partner, Jesseca, posted a photo of them together on her Instagram page, her first thought was, "I just came out after 20-something years!"
Da Brat stressed that her label did not pressure her to stay in the closet. She wanted to be f*ckable to men and women to sell records. The Grio claims, “Both misogyny and homophobia created a culture where coming out would have been career suicide for Black women in Hip Hop.“ Now, the industry is wondering if others will follow Da Brat's lead. Looking at you, Queen Latifah.
After coming out and receiving such positive responses, Da Brat wondered, "Why didn't I do this sh*t years ago?" This year will be the first time Da Brat will celebrate Pride out loud and proud. She said it feels like a weight has been lifted.
