Doja Cat is a way better troll than Lil Nas X. Last night, after winning "Best New Pop Artist" at the iHeart Awards, Doja decided to have some fun with those who want to shove her into the "female rapper" box.
Doja tweeted she was dropping a new song and then posted the link for her new song, "Very Best," on Soundcloud.
She then tweeted, "DONT EVER FUCKIN DISRESPECT ME AS A RAPPER. AFTER THE LAST SONG I DROPPED YOU WILL RESPECT MY PEN AND THATS FUCKIN THAT. stream Very Best."
I have the feeling that many people did not actually listen to "Very Best" and took her tweet seriously. Doja Cat is a troll artist just like Lil Nas X, but better at it and arguably more talented. The same people who
deny Lizzo is a rapper are trying to shove this label onto Doja, which I don't even think she wants. I feel the push has more to do with her aesthetic than her actual rapping.
Doja Cat is a hybrid artist who leans more Pop. So, to me, she qualifies as a Pop artist who can rap, but I don't get mad if she is nominated in rap categories. If you're talented in more than one genre, I think that should be recognized by award shows. I don't think we should punish multi-talented artists. Doja Cat is a branch off Lauryn Hill's tree.
Doja is aware of the agenda of pitting her against the rap girls, so she mocking it.
