On May 26, 1975, Lauryn Hill AKA L-Boogie, was born. Lauryn Hill is a rapper, singer, actress, poet,
songwriter, and an all-around beautiful human being. She grew up in South Orange, NJ, and it was in high school where she met Pras, who asked her to join his group along with his cousin Wyclef. We all know where this is going...FUGEES MOFOS!
As a member of the Fugees, L-Boogie garnered a lot of attention for how she spits rhymes and how she could sannng with the best of them. She is really the godmother of this melodic sound that is so popular right now. Many artists try to find the perfect balance of rap and harmony the way Lauryn did so effortlessly, but many come up short.
The Fugees released two albums, Blunted On Reality, and the classic The Score. The Score is certified 6 x
platinum. It's probably diamond by now, but no one is paying for the certifications considering the fallout. The Score won a "Best Rap Album" Grammy.
Lauryn Hill next put all the pain and frustrations from her fallout with men/industry into her solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Back to Back classic albums. L-Boogie is a female rapper who made a classic R&B album. Isn't that what some of y'all faves are trying to do?
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill debuted with 423K sales and topped the Billboard 200 for 4 weeks. It's certified 8M U.S. / 12M WW. Lauryn became the first woman to be nominated in ten categories in a single year for a Grammy. The night of the Grammys, she then became the first woman to win five awards in a single night, which included Album of the Year and Best New Artist!
Those are just the highlight. She did so much more before walking away from the industry. But, now y'all see why people try to EXCLUDE her from female rap conversations. Lauryn Hill had the skills and stats. Her accomplishments are what female rappers who want longevity strive for. Don't let false narratives fool you.
The Queen who has inspired other Queens and Kings. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, L-BOOGIE!
