Jussie Smollett's trial for allegedly staging a 2019 hate crime attack started today in Chicago. In the prosecutor's opening statements, he presented to the jury Smollett's motive as an attempt to get the attention of his "Empire" colleagues, who he felt ignored homophobic threats made to him while on the show.
Jussie is sticking with this story that he was attacked by two men who poured a substance on him, yelled homophobic slurs, and put a noose around his neck.
The alleged attackers were identified as actors, the Osundairo brothers, who claim Jussie paid them for the hoax attack. They will be testifying in this case.
The trial is expected to last about a week, and it is unclear if Smollet will testify.
