I’ll Be Gone in the Dark is a new six-part documentary series based on the book of the same name, which explores writer Michelle McNamara’s investigation into the dark world of a violent predator she dubbed the Golden State Killer. Directed by Academy Award nominee and Emmy-winning director Liz Garbus via HBO
I am watching this series because this case had me hooked in 2018. I listen to true crime podcasts and one of my fave shows did a series on the Golden State Killer. I used to go hiking for hours listening to this podcast, and then be scared on my way down the trail cause I thought everyone I passed could be a serial killer. I never heard of this killer, and it scared me that he never got caught and his hunting grounds were in California. It was mostly in Northern Cali, but still.
Since I was so interested in this case, I found Michelle McNamara's book about her investigation on the Golden State Killer. I would go on long walks listening to her book. When I finished the book, I swear it was a week later, they caught the Golden State Killer. I screamed.
For those who don't know, the Golden State Killer was killing and raping in the 70s and 80s. His M.O. was to break into married couples' homes, tie up the husband, and put plates and cups on his back. This was a way to signal if the guy tried to escape. He would rape the wife in another room. He would also take time to eat after the rapes. His attacks were not limited to married couples. One victim was a pre-teen.
They only way they caught him was from a DNA hit in 2018. He is 74 years old now and today is expected to plead guilty to 13 counts to avoid the death penalty. He has more than 13 victims, but y'all know how it goes.
