Saweetie Talks To People Magazine About Homophobia In Hip Hop and Upcoming Album

Saweetie talks homophobia in hip hop / rap music

On Monday, People Magazine interviewed Saweetie following her performance at Sprite's Live from the Label concert series. One of the questions female rappers seem to be asked is their thoughts on homophobia in Hip Hip after DaBaby was "canceled" following his comments about gays and AIDS/HIV at Rolling Loud.

Saweetie told the publication, "I think that it's important that we all respect each other. We all bleed the same. We're all human beings. I was raised in a household that believes in respecting everyone, no matter who they are, no matter what they do, because at the end of the day, we're all equal. We all need to call out what we're uncomfortable with. We need to call out what we stand for and for what we believe is right. Representation is important, and it is really crucial for us all to have compassion and acceptance of every human."

I'm conflicted about female rappers being put out front on this topic when it was a male rapper who made the remarks and refused to give a genuine apology. On the one hand, I love when the girls speak up on Hip Hop's issues, but the homophobia in Hip Hop is still being brushed under the rug. No meaningful discussions are being had about homophobia in rap music. Instead, it's all about "cancel culture." This feels like when a brotha is gun down by law enforcement, and Black women are expected to march in the frontline while others hide behind us.

Saweetie also spoke to People about improving her artistry and stage presence before dropping her upcoming album "Pretty Bitch Music."
