Summer Walker's "Ex For A Reason" Review: Not What I Expected, But That's Ok

In anticipation for her sophomore album, "Still Over It," last Friday, Summer Walker dropped her first single, "Ex For A Reason," featuring JT of the City Girls. I listened to it the day it dropped, but before leaping out with a review, I did what everyone was begging others to do with Drake's Certified

Lover Boy; I sat with it.

On the first listen, I set the mood. I mean, this is Summer Walker; I needed to be prepared. So, I dimmed my lights, got my liquor, laid down, was ready to be all up in my feelings - I pressed PLAY.

oH nO-oH nO-oH No, oH No, oH No! It did not take me long to realize that I had prepared for this song all wrong. Instead of grabbing liquor, I should have grabbed my roller skates. What in the Ghost Town DJ's is this was my initial reaction. It reminded me of "My Boo," a song I loved...during the summertime.

The Buddha Bless and Sean Garrett produced track caught me off guard with how uptempo it was, and maybe that was the plan. "Ex For A Reason" strikes me as more of a summer song, and I could be being hypocritical because the Rap girls drop turn-up songs all year long, but I just feel like this song is a couple months too late. Also, I question if it's strong enough to be a lead single. But, any talk of this song being trash is people being lazy with their words. The song just did not meet the expectations that a lot of us had in our heads, but that does not make it trash. It's just a song I feel like I would be more in the mood for if it were July and not October. I also could be nitpicking, LOL. JT delivered. I do want the song to be a success. Stream for the hell of it.

Like always I reserve the right to change my opinion.

Rollout Queen

Oh, I want to stress again how Summer Walker's album rollout is unmatched. Fck those billboards. Summer's rollout is creative, engaging, and fun. No trolling needed.
