Usher's classic album, "Confessions," turns sweet 16 today. On March 23rd, 2004, Usher solidified
himself as the King of R&B when he went back to back with the release of "Confessions." This album was the follow-up to Usher's hugely successful and classic 8701. While 8701 introduced the world to a grown-up Usher, Confessions proved he is that rare all-around entertainer.
At a time when Pop and Hip Hop were dominating, Usher reminded people that R&B got something to say. "Confessions" sold 1.1 million copies in the first week. No, that is not a typo...1.1 MILLION COPIES, and I ain't talk'n streams muthafckaz! I am talking about physical copies. I am talking about lying to your mama about doing extra chores if she buys you a CD, then begging her to drive you to the store, only to have to wait in a long ass line because everyone was buying Usher too. All of this so you can rush home to hear the sweet sounds of that shrinkwrap ripping off. The excitement that comes when you first open a CD booklet to read all the credits cannot be matched today. "Confessions" is the second-best-selling album of the 2000s decade, behind Eminem. Yes, "You make me wanna" did that, "7 O'Clock on the dot" did that, "You remind me of a girl" did that! This is the highest first-week sales for an R&B artist.
"Confession" became Usher's first #1 album and won him various awards. The album is certified diamond, as it should be.
