Lauryn Hill is truly one of the most impactful and versatile artists music has ever seen. She was called a rapper because she rapped. She was known as an R&B artists because she did R&B music—no jack of all trades, expert at none over here. As a member of the legendary group The Fugees, she helped propel the group to international success, and multiple Grammy wins. After much talk of Lauryn going solo and due to internal disagreements with group members, she took the leap with her classic and diamond-selling album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. That album became the blueprint for many rappers who combine singing and rapping, even if they don't realize it.
In 1999, Lauryn Hill became the first rapper to win Album of The Year at the Grammys.
